ARTIST STATEMENT

Drawings

These drawings are of an ongoing series of stark images of birds/animals at a human scale that create an almost confrontational relationship between the viewer and the elements of nature. These unsentimental black and white drawings in charcoal ask the viewer to take another look at these magnificent creatures and indeed at our responsibility to them.

I hope to portray the deeper richness and the unique value of these magnificent creatures. They gaze back at us, asking to be really looked at, seen as equals deserving our respect and an equal place on this world. I am interested in reconnecting us to the greater value of this world and the many forms of life we share it with.

Paintings and Photographs

The paintings and photographs on the following pages form a series of commonplace urban landscapes and images that examine our unnatural and often unconscious impact on the environment.  Deriving images from my everyday surroundings, I objectively portray the unconscious ways in which we reshape and harness the forces of nature around us. I question our nature and the mystery of our true relationship to the world in which we live.

These paintings are from an ongoing series of commonplace urban landscapes and images that examine our unnatural and often unconscious impact on the world.  A world in which an Island is a patch of single species grass, cut and framed by concrete in a sea of asphalt. I seek to identify that which has become so commonplace that we no longer see it, question it, or recognize its significance.
